Emma Roberts is diving back into familiar waters. The 35‑year‑old actress, who rose to fame in the beloved teen fantasy film Aquamarine, is officially set to reprise her role as Claire Brown in a rebooted series and this time, she’s also stepping behind the camera.

PEOPLE has confirmed that a pilot episode for the Aquamarine reboot is now in development, with Roberts attached both as star and executive producer. Known for standout performances in We’re The Millers, American Horror Story, and Scream Queens, Roberts’ return marks a major win for fans of the original film.

The reboot is also bringing back familiar creative talent. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the 2006 movie, will return to helm the new project, raising expectations for a faithful yet refreshed take on the story. Producer Susan Cartsonis will also join the series as an executive producer.

The newly released official log line offers a glimpse into the show’s direction: “When teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”

The reboot promises a blend of mystery, magic and emotional depth, expanding the Aquamarine universe for a new generation while honouring the charm that made the original a cult favourite.
