UN Security Council Unanimously Backs New Push to Hold Attackers of Peacekeepers Accountable

2 min read

The UN Security Council has adopted a landmark resolution aimed at strengthening global accountability for attacks on UN peacekeepers, responding to mounting concern over rising violence and persistently low prosecution rates. The move comes after a deadly surge in assaults on UN personnel, including the killing of seven peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon during renewed clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in early March.

Drafted by Denmark and Pakistan and co‑sponsored by an extraordinary 152 countries, the resolution passed unanimously a rare show of unity on an issue that has long troubled the UN’s peacekeeping operations. It urges host nations to take “all necessary measures” to investigate and prosecute those responsible for attacks, stressing that accountability is essential to preventing future violence.

Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan’s ruling reaffirmed that host states bear the primary responsibility for the safety of UN personnel, but the Council made clear that all parties must cooperate fully with investigations. The text also calls on the UN secretary‑general to appoint a senior focal point to coordinate global efforts to improve accountability for crimes against peacekeepers a long‑requested reform.

The resolution encourages troop‑ and police‑contributing countries to deploy investigators, at the request of host states, to support inquiries on the ground. It also mandates an annual progress report on investigations and prosecutions, signalling the Council’s intention to maintain pressure for results.

In a strong warning, the Council said attacks on peacekeepers may constitute war crimes, and expressed readiness to consider further steps if accountability continues to lag. For thousands of peacekeepers deployed in some of the world’s most volatile regions, the vote represents a renewed commitment to their protection and a message that violence against them will no longer be met with silence.
