Minister Says Govt Aiming for Smooth, Hassle‑Free Eid Travel Despite Massive Holiday Rush

Road Transport, Shipping and Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said Friday that the government is working to ensure a smooth, comfortable and trouble‑free Eid‑ul‑Azha journey this year, but warned that public cooperation and favourable weather will be crucial.

Speaking to reporters in Cumilla, the minister said the movement of 15 million people and 10 million sacrificial animals within just three days remains one of the biggest logistical challenges of the year. He said authorities are preparing extensively, but the success of the Eid travel period will depend on awareness, discipline and the absence of natural disruptions.

“We will try to overcome the challenges. If everyone cooperates, people remain aware and no natural disaster occurs, we hope to make this year’s Eid journey comfortable,” he said after distributing Tk489 million in compensation cheques to the families of 119 road accident victims. The funds were provided by the BRTA Trustee Board and Bangladesh Railway.

Rabiul Alam also highlighted the growing pressure on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, calling it the country’s most vital route but one that is now operating far beyond its capacity.
“The pressure on the existing four‑lane highway indicates the need for a 10‑lane road,” he said, adding that the government is already working to expand the corridor with eight traffic lanes and two service lanes.

State Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Railways Habibur Rashid, Cumilla‑6 MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury, and senior officials were present at the event.
