Tony Abbott Set to Return to Frontline Party Leadership as New Federal President of the Liberal Party

1 min read

Former prime minister Tony Abbott is poised to make a formal return to active political life, with senior Liberal Party officials confirming he will become the party’s next federal president.

A senior Liberal source told AAP that Abbott will be the sole nominee for the position, meaning his appointment will be confirmed unopposed at the party’s federal council meeting in Melbourne next week.

Abbott, who served as Australia’s prime minister from 2013 to 2015, was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull following a leadership spill triggered by backlash over controversial cost‑cutting measures and unpopular decisions including the reintroduction of knights and dames and the knighting of Prince Philip.

Alongside Abbott’s return, former foreign minister Alexander Downer has been nominated for one of the party’s vice‑president roles. Downer is one of five candidates contesting four available positions.

The appointments mark a significant reshaping of the Liberal Party’s senior organisational leadership as it prepares for future electoral and strategic challenges.
