Three Killed in Shooting at San Diego Islamic Center as Police Probe Possible Hate Crime

2 min read

A deadly shooting at an Islamic center and adjoining Islamic school in San Diego has left three adults dead, prompting fears of a hate‑motivated attack in one of California’s largest cities.

The incident unfolded Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD), where police say two male attackers estimated to be 17 and 19 years old entered the premises before dying from what investigators believe were self‑inflicted gunshot wounds. Among the victims was a security guard whose quick response, authorities say, likely prevented an even greater tragedy.

Children inside the Islamic school were unharmed, though the community remains shaken. Police initially issued an active‑shooter alert before confirming the situation was under control. Investigators are now working to determine the motive and broader context behind the attack, which occurred at a location known for serving both Muslim and non‑Muslim residents as a space for prayer, education and community gatherings.

Imam Taha Hassane condemned the violence, calling the center “a place of unity” and describing the attack as deeply disturbing. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria vowed that the city would take every measure necessary to protect its Muslim community, stressing that “there is no place for hate” in the city.

In response to the incident, New York police increased security at mosques across the city as a precaution.

US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting and described it as “horrific.” The attack comes amid rising concerns over Islamophobia in the United States, adding new urgency to calls for stronger protections for religious communities.
