A Dhaka court has placed two men on a five‑day remand over the theft of copper cables from the red telephone line connected to the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat an incident authorities describe as highly sensitive.
The accused, Ranjan Chandra, an outsourcing employee at the Secretariat, and Rezakul Islam, a scrap trader, were produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat on Friday. Investigators had sought a seven‑day remand, Sub‑Inspector Shah Alam of the DMP Prosecution Division confirmed.
Both men were arrested on Thursday after police recovered the stolen cables from a scrap shop near Dhaka University’s Ekushey Hall, based on information obtained during interrogation.
According to police, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit launched a shadow investigation due to the seriousness of the breach. Investigators say Ranjan confessed to stealing 8.2 kilograms of copper wire from Building No. 3 of the Secretariat on 22 May, selling it for Tk600 per kilogram at a nearby scrap shop.
Following his confession, scrap trader Rezakul was arrested from the same area.
The case has raised concerns about internal security lapses within one of the country’s most restricted government zones, prompting heightened scrutiny from law enforcement agencies.
