Authorities Warn of Heightened Risks Amid Global Tensions. Paris police have banned a major annual gathering of French Muslims, citing what they describe as a “major terrorist risk” linked to the current national and international security climate. The event, which was set to mark its 40th edition, was scheduled to run from April 3 to April 6 at the Paris–Le Bourget Exhibition Center.
Paris police chief Patrice Faure announced the decision on X, saying he acted at the request of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. He noted that the ban comes at a time of heightened alert, increased geopolitical tensions and a heavy police deployment expected across the capital in the coming days.
The gathering, organised by the Muslims of France association, was due to take place just north of Paris. The police order stated that the event faced risks on multiple fronts including potential disruption by “small far‑right groups” and a broader threat environment that has intensified in recent months.
Authorities said the Muslim community itself could be a target, pointing to a “significant terrorist risk” surrounding the event. The order referenced a foiled attempt last weekend to bomb the Bank of America building in Paris, an incident prosecutors believe may be linked to a pro‑Iran group. Officials say the attempted attack underscores the seriousness of the threat landscape inside France, particularly as the Middle East conflict continues to inflame tensions.
Police also cited the polarised political climate during recent municipal elections as a contributing factor to the decision.
The ban comes as the French interior ministry prepares to introduce a draft law aimed at preventing radical Islamist elements from infiltrating Muslim organisations. The bill is expected to be presented to President Emmanuel Macron’s cabinet at the end of April, the ministry confirmed to AFP.
