Marvel Eyes Earlier Release for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as IMAX Battle With ‘Dune: Part Three’ Heats Up

What was expected to become a colossal “Dunesday” showdown at the December box office may now be defused. Marvel Studios is reportedly considering shifting the release of Avengers: Doomsday to an earlier date not to sidestep Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, but to secure access to premium IMAX screens during one of the most crowded holiday seasons in years.

Industry reports suggest Marvel is in active discussions to move the film’s release to December 11, a full week ahead of its current December 18 slot. The strategic rethink comes after Dune: Part Three locked in its IMAX window as early as June 2024, effectively blocking Marvel from IMAX access if both films hold their dates. With IMAX playing a crucial role in Marvel’s past successes, the studio appears unwilling to risk losing that advantage.

The numbers speak for themselves. When Avengers: Endgame premiered in 2019, IMAX alone generated an astonishing USD 91.5 million during opening weekend. That one‑week IMAX run helped the film become the fastest in history to reach USD 1 billion, hitting the milestone in just five days before climbing to a lifetime total of USD 2.79 billion.

Adding to the December congestion, Bollywood’s highly anticipated King starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan is set for a December 25 release, further intensifying the global box‑office race.

With studios scrambling for premium screens and audience attention, December 2026 is shaping up to be one of the fiercest release windows Hollywood has seen in years.
