Cricket Australia Unveils Jam‑Packed Summer as Historic Scheduling Crunch Forces Midweek Test Start

3 min read

Cricket Australia has released one of the most congested fixture lists the sport has ever seen, forcing the marquee Test summer to begin on a Wednesday in Perth a move driven by an unprecedented calendar squeeze stretching from August to March. The schedule, unveiled on Sunday, weaves together overlapping Test tours of South Africa and India with a sprawling home season that begins with two Top‑End Tests against Bangladesh in Darwin and Mackay. The summer will conclude with a day‑night 150‑year anniversary Test against England at the MCG. But it is the four‑Test series against New Zealand that is set to spark the most debate, squeezed into a frantic 31‑day window.

New Zealand will arrive in Australia straight from a Test tour of India, with no time for a warm‑up match before the opening Test in Perth on December 9. The lack of preparation mirrors England’s ill‑fated Ashes build‑up last summer, when they were caught cold without a tour match.

The trans‑Tasman series was originally slated for three Tests, but the addition of a fourth has left almost no breathing room the longest gap between matches is just four days. With Australia set to depart for a five‑Test tour of India immediately after the SCG Test, officials had no option but to start the Perth Test midweek, despite historically low Wednesday crowds.

CA’s head of operations, Peter Roach, said attempts were made to push the Perth Test back by a day, but player workloads made it impossible. With Australia facing up to 21 Tests between this August and next July, Roach said fast‑bowler management was a critical factor.

The Gabba has again missed out on hosting a Test, with Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney completing the New Zealand series. All four Tests will be played in daylight, with the only pink‑ball match reserved for the anniversary Test against England in March.

England will also feature earlier in the season with three ODIs and five T20s, wrapping up just a week before the Perth Test. The schedule also includes a window for Australia A red‑ball matches in India ahead of the South Africa tour.

On the women’s side, Australia will not host a Test for the first time since the pandemic, with New Zealand Cricket opting out of long‑form matches. Instead, the women’s summer will feature ODI and T20 series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, though scheduling conflicts mean the February fixtures will be played at smaller venues.

The 2026–27 summer promises wall‑to‑wall cricket but also raises questions about player fatigue, crowd turnout, and whether the sport’s relentless calendar has finally reached breaking point.
