An Indian media report has named three close associates of former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina Salman F. Rahman, Anisul Huq, and Mohammad A. Arafat alleging they played a “mysterious role” during the student-led movement that ultimately forced Hasina from power.
According to the report, the analysis suggested that actions by these individuals may have inadvertently advanced what it described as the objectives of the US “deep state.” The outlet wrote that the government and the Awami League failed to contain the uprising in part because of these internal dynamics.
On 5 August, Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled to India. Days later, on the night of 13 August, Salman F. Rahman her adviser on private industry and investment and then-law minister Anisul Huq were reportedly detained in Dhaka’s Sadarghat area.
The report also claimed that many believe former state minister for information Mohammad A. Arafat used his “Western connections” to leave the country, though his current location remains unclear.
These accounts add to the swirl of speculation surrounding the dramatic political collapse of the Awami League government and the fate of several of its senior figures.
