Bolivian Military Plane Carrying New Banknotes Crashes on Busy Avenue, Killing 15

2 min read

A Bolivian Air Force Hercules aircraft transporting newly printed banknotes crashed onto a major avenue in the city of El Alto on Friday, leaving 15 people dead and injuring at least 30 others, according to Fire Chief Pavel Tovar, who spoke to local outlet Unitel.

The crash occurred amid severe weather conditions near La Paz, with early reports indicating the aircraft had arrived from Santa Cruz before skidding off the runway at El Alto’s airport. The plane then plunged onto a neighbouring roadway, colliding with multiple vehicles. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the victims were passengers, motorists, or bystanders caught in the impact.

Bolivia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the aircraft was transporting currency destined for distribution across the country. The scene quickly descended into chaos as crowds rushed toward the wreckage, with social media footage appearing to show people collecting banknotes scattered across the ground. Reuters said it could not verify the authenticity of the videos.

Emergency crews struggled to secure the area, using water hoses to push back onlookers as they worked to reach the injured and contain the scene. Local officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue and authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

The incident has raised urgent questions about flight safety during adverse weather and the security protocols surrounding the transport of national currency.
