Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has begun a large‑scale military exercise in the Strait of Hormuz, even as Iranian officials continue nuclear‑related discussions with US representatives. The drill started on Monday, according to Iran’s state‑run television.
The report said the exercise is part of advance preparations against potential military and security threats, though the IRGC has not yet announced how long the drill will continue. During the operation, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will remain suspended.
A critical global trade route
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints.
One‑quarter of global oil shipments
One‑fifth of global LNG transport
pass through this narrow waterway each year.
IRGC leadership and objectives
IRGC commander General Mohammad Pakpour is overseeing the drill. Iranian media reports say the exercise aims to test the country’s ability to deliver a rapid counter‑response in an emergency.
The drill is being conducted around Abu Musa Island and its surrounding waters in the eastern Persian Gulf. Iran has recently strengthened the island’s military infrastructure.
An IRGC official, speaking anonymously to AFP, said multiple missiles have been deployed on the island, capable of striking targets up to 1,000 kilometers away.
