Man in His 40s Dies at Sydney Music Festival as Five Others Hospitalised

A night of trance and techno at Sydney Olympic Park ended in tragedy after a man in his 40s died and five others were rushed to hospital during the Dreamstate Festival on Saturday night.

Multiple medical emergencies reported
Police said several festival‑goers suffered “medical episodes” around 11:30pm. NSW Health later confirmed two urgent medical transfers and three non‑urgent transfers, alongside the man’s death. He has not yet been formally identified.

A NSW Health spokesperson said a range of harm‑reduction measures were in place at the event, including chill‑out zones, misting fans, free water and on‑site medical teams.

No pill‑testing available at the event
Minister for Music and the Night‑Time Economy John Graham said there was no pill‑testing facility at Dreamstate, despite the state’s ongoing trial.

A safety action plan was in place, he said, but warned festival‑goers about the risks: “We really want to get the word out about the dangers here.”

Police have launched an investigation, and the government will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Pill‑testing trial continues elsewhere
So far, 11 festivals have joined NSW’s year‑long pill‑testing trial, including Laneway Festival on Sunday, which is expected to draw more than 40,000 people to Centennial Park.

The drug‑checking service provides information about the contents and potency of substances, aiming to reduce harm among festival attendees.
