Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, the ICC announced on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding Bangladesh’s participation. Discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the ICC had continued for nearly three weeks, during which rumours circulated that Scotland might be invited as an alternative. Although Cricket Scotland initially said it had received no formal communication, the speculation has now become reality.
The ICC confirmed that Bangladesh has been removed from the 2026 T20 World Cup after expressing unwillingness to play in India due to security concerns. The board said Bangladesh formally notified the ICC of its decision not to participate under the published schedule. Following an internal assessment, the ICC stated it found no credible or verifiable security threat to the Bangladesh team in India, and therefore rejected BCB’s request to shift matches to Sri Lanka.
Scotland Welcomes the Opportunity
Cricket Scotland reacted swiftly on social media, posting: “Always ready.” In another update, the team wrote that preparations were underway to travel to India “as quickly as possible.” The posts spread rapidly across social platforms as fans celebrated the unexpected opportunity.
Cricket Scotland CEO Trudy Lindblad said the team had officially received and accepted the ICC’s invitation. “This is an incredible opportunity for Scotland’s players to compete on the world stage in front of hundreds of thousands of supporters,” she said. “We also recognise that this chance has come in a challenging and unusual situation.”
