Red baseball caps spoofing Donald Trump’s well known campaign hats have become an unexpected emblem of resistance in Denmark and Greenland, as anger grows over the US president’s threat to claim the Arctic territory. The bright red caps read “Make America Go Away,” a pointed twist on the original slogan, and they are now appearing across social media and at public demonstrations.
The hats were a prominent sight at a weekend protest in Copenhagen, where crowds braved freezing temperatures to show solidarity with Greenland. European governments have voiced support for Denmark, warning that pressure on Greenland threatens broader Arctic and Western security. Protesters, meanwhile, have taken a more direct approach.
“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said 76 year old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, proudly wearing one of the parody caps.
The creator behind the trend is Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who runs a vintage clothing shop in Copenhagen. His early batches drew little attention, but interest exploded after recent comments from Washington reignited concerns about US intentions toward Greenland. Tonnesen said the shift made him realize the situation was no longer a joke. He wanted to respond with humor while uniting Danes behind Greenland.
Demand surged so quickly that the hats sold out within a weekend, prompting Tonnesen to order several thousand more. His first design featured a Danish wordplay: “Nu det NUUK,” a twist on a phrase meaning “Now it’s enough,” replacing the final word with Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
At Saturday’s rally, protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and held handmade signs ridiculing US claims over the vast island, which is slightly larger than Saudi Arabia. The red caps have now become a visual shorthand for a growing public pushback.
