Health authorities in South Australia and New South Wales are urging the public to stay alert for measles symptoms after an infected international traveller passed through several busy locations including Adelaide Airport and Sydney Airport in late December.
SA Health confirmed that an adult who contracted measles overseas visited multiple public sites, including Marion Shopping Centre, before flying from Adelaide to Sydney on a Qantas flight on December 29.
Who Should Monitor for Symptoms?
Authorities have issued specific guidance:
Passengers on the Qantas flight and anyone at the Sydney Airport terminal during the exposure window should monitor for symptoms until January 16.
Anyone exposed in a hospital emergency department should monitor for symptoms until January 21.
NSW Health noted that this is the third measles case in travellers returning from South-East Asia, where outbreaks are ongoing. Two other recent cases involved returned travellers who visited locations in northern and western Sydney.
Exposure sites are listed on the NSW Health website.
What Authorities Are Advising
SA Health has urged anyone who becomes unwell to seek medical care but with caution:
“It is very important that people suspecting measles phone their doctor before any visit and mention why they are attending, so precautions can be taken to avoid spreading disease to others.”
This aligns with general medical guidance that measles is highly contagious, and individuals should avoid exposing others in waiting rooms or clinics.
General Information About Measles Symptoms
According to credible health sources, measles symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a blotchy rash that appears several days after initial flu‑like symptoms.
