Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro arrived at a U.S. military base on Saturday evening before being transferred to New York City, following his capture by American forces in Caracas.
FBI agents surrounded Maduro as he stepped off a U.S. government aircraft, escorting him across the tarmac at a National Guard facility in New York state. He was then flown by helicopter to Manhattan, where a heavy law‑enforcement presence awaited, according to AFP images.
U.S. media report that the 63‑year‑old leader was first taken to the offices of the Drug Enforcement Administration before being moved to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn the same federal jail where rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs was held during his trial last year.
Maduro and his wife are expected to be arraigned in New York at a later date. They face charges including narco‑terrorism, importing large quantities of cocaine into the United States, and possession of illegal weapons.
