Firefighters Battle Second Night of Out‑of‑Control Blaze Near Rockingham; Mandurah Line Still Closed

2 min read

More than 140 firefighters have spent a second night battling an out‑of‑control bushfire near Rockingham in Perth’s southern suburbs, with the Mandurah train line still partially shut down.

A watch and act warning remains in place for parts of Waikiki and Warnbro, where the fire continues to pose a possible threat to lives and homes, about 60 kilometres south of Perth’s CBD.

The alert applies to residents within the boundaries of Willmott Drive, Ennis Avenue, Jurien Close, The Avenue, Ambleside Parade, Harrington Waters Drive, Santa Monica Drive and Gnangara Drive.

Fire crews have faced significant challenges due to unexploded ordnance in the area. Because machinery cannot safely operate on the ground, aerial support was deployed on Tuesday to drop retardant and strengthen containment lines.

Train services on the Mandurah line remain cancelled between Rockingham and Mandurah, and Warnbro Station, including its car park, is closed. Replacement buses are operating between Rockingham and Mandurah, while trains continue to run between Perth and Rockingham.

Several major roads have also been closed, including Safety Bay Road between Mandurah Road and Warnbro Sound Avenue, and Ennis Avenue between Willmott Drive and Royal Palm Drive.

Motorists have been urged to drive cautiously in the Warnbro area due to heavy smoke. Strike Force Vulcan, led by WA Police arson detectives, is investigating the cause of the fire, which began around 7 p.m. on Monday near Warnbro Station.
