A brutal shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal, a town near Johannesburg, has left nine people dead and ten others injured. The attack took place around 1 a.m. on Saturday when a group of about twelve armed men arrived in a white minibus and a silver car and opened fire without warning.
Police said the attackers stayed only a short time before killing nine people, including the tavern owner, and injuring ten more. Authorities confirmed that the tavern was legally registered, a detail that matches information released by the South African Police Service.
However, the country’s public broadcaster reported that the shooting and casualties occurred not inside the tavern but on the street outside. The area falls within Gauteng Province, whose capital is Johannesburg.
Gauteng’s acting provincial police commissioner Fred Kekana said investigators have not yet identified a motive or the attackers. Crime scene experts, intelligence officers and provincial police teams are working together to collect evidence and pursue leads. All injured victims have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
