A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing a crossbow at police officers during a standoff in Eltham, in Melbourne’s north-east, on Monday afternoon.

Police said officers responded to reports of a man armed with a crossbow and behaving erratically at a property on Reynolds Road around 1:40 p.m. After attempts to make contact failed, the property was cordoned off.

According to Victoria Police, the man emerged from the back door and fired the crossbow at two officers. “Members drew their firearms and shots were fired at the man who retreated inside the property,” the statement said. The suspect was not physically injured during the exchange.

A short time later, the man surrendered and was taken into custody. He is currently being interviewed by police.

The Professional Standards Command has been notified as part of standard protocol, and the investigation remains ongoing.
