Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cautioned that Kyiv may face a painful choice as the White House pushes a peace plan to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In a national address on Friday, Zelensky said Ukraine “might face a very difficult choice: either losing dignity, or risk losing a key partner,” calling the moment “one of the most difficult in our history.”
The U.S. Peace Plan
The leaked proposal reportedly includes provisions Ukraine has long rejected:
Ceding eastern territories still under Kyiv’s control.
Significantly reducing the size of Ukraine’s army.
Pledging not to join NATO.
These terms are widely viewed as favoring Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plan could serve as a “basis” for settlement, though he stressed Russia was prepared to continue fighting.
Trump’s Position
Later in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that Zelensky would “have to like” the plan, otherwise the war would continue.
Ukraine’s Dependence on U.S. Support
Ukraine relies heavily on U.S. assistance, including:
Advanced weaponry such as air defense systems.
Intelligence support to counter Russian attacks.
With Russia’s full-scale invasion ongoing since 2022, the debate over the U.S. plan underscores the stakes for Kyiv as it balances sovereignty against the risk of losing its most critical ally.
