Director Sofia Coppola and actress Kirsten Dunst may soon reunite for a new film project, according to a report from Deadline. Coppola revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that she and Dunst have been discussing the idea of working together again, nearly ten years after their last collaboration on 2017’s The Beguiled.
“I have so many original ideas, adaptations. I’m kind of all over the place. Kirsten and I were talking about doing something, but I just kind of put everything on pause. I really want to do something with Kirsten, and there was one thing we were thinking of and figuring out. I would love to get back to making a film again,” Coppola said.
The pair’s creative partnership dates back to Coppola’s feature debut, 1999’s The Virgin Suicides, which marked Dunst’s breakout role. They later worked together on Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Beguiled, with Dunst also making a cameo as herself in The Bling Ring (2013).
Dunst has often spoken fondly of her collaborations with Coppola. Reflecting on The Virgin Suicides, she told Deadline in 2021: “I really think working with Sofia at such a young age, at 16, gave me the feeling that I was beautiful. I looked up to her so much. I thought she was and I still do, just the coolest girl.” She added that Coppola’s validation helped her avoid being defined by the male gaze, saying the film became her true coming-of-age moment.
Fans of both Coppola and Dunst are eagerly awaiting confirmation of their next project, which would continue one of the most celebrated director-actor collaborations in modern cinema.
