India’s women’s cricket team has won the Women’s ODI World Cup for the first time, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Along with the trophy, the team secured a record prize purse of 4.48 million US dollars, equivalent to nearly 55 crore Bangladeshi taka.
This marks a new milestone in women’s cricket, as the prize money far surpasses previous tournaments. In comparison, Australia, the 2022 champions, received only 1.32 million dollars. India’s payout represents a 239 percent increase. Remarkably, the prize money also exceeded that of the men’s 2023 World Cup, where champions Australia earned 4 million dollars.
South Africa, the runners-up, received 2.24 million dollars, half of the champion’s share. The two semifinalists each earned 1.12 million dollars. Teams finishing fifth and sixth collected 700,000 dollars each, while the seventh- and eighth-placed teams received 280,000 dollars each.
All eight participating teams were also awarded a participation fee of 250,000 dollars, with an additional 34,314 dollars for every group-stage win.
Bangladesh finished in seventh place, earning 280,000 dollars for their position. They added 34,314 dollars from their sole group-stage victory against Pakistan, bringing their total to 564,314 dollars, or nearly 6.9 crore Bangladeshi taka.
The record prize pool has been hailed as a turning point for women’s cricket. Officials and players believe this financial boost will make the women’s game more professional, competitive, and globally recognized.
