President Javier Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, has secured more than half the seats in both chambers of Argentina’s newly elected parliament, strengthening his ability to push forward with sweeping reforms.
According to official results, the party won 64 of the 127 seats in the lower house and 13 of the 24 seats in the upper house. This outcome gives Milei a solid parliamentary base to advance his agenda.
Argentina has been grappling with a severe economic crisis marked by the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, record inflation, mounting debt, and dwindling foreign currency reserves. Against this backdrop, conservative leader Milei rose to power in the 2023 elections, promising to slash unnecessary spending and streamline government institutions. He famously declared that his administration would operate like an “electric saw,” cutting through waste and bureaucracy.
Over the past two years, his government has implemented deep budget cuts in education, pensions, and infrastructure. Thousands of public sector workers have been laid off across various services. These austerity measures have triggered repeated protests nationwide, but the government has remained firm.
Despite widespread discontent, a significant portion of the population continues to back Milei’s reform program, seeing it as a necessary step to stabilize the country’s fragile economy.
