The government of Bangladesh is preparing to transform the historic Pabna Mental Hospital into a state-of-the-art Institute and Hospital for Mental Health under a Tk1,365.19 crore project aimed at revolutionizing psychiatric care, education, and research across the country.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council is expected to review and approve the project on 21 October. Fully funded by the government, the initiative will be carried out by the Directorate General of Health Services under the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The project is scheduled to run from January 2025 through December 2027.

Titled “Transformation of Pabna Mental Hospital into an International Standard Institute and Hospital for Mental Health,” the project seeks to elevate the 66-year-old facility into Bangladesh’s first internationally accredited center dedicated solely to mental health.

Located in Hemayetpur, Pabna Sadar, within the Rajshahi division, the upgraded institute will feature modern infrastructure, cutting-edge medical technology, and academic facilities aligned with global standards. Once completed, it will offer advanced clinical services, postgraduate education, and research programs focused on mental health.

Founded in 1959 on 132 acres of land donated by Thakur Anukul Chandra, Pabna Mental Hospital is the oldest and largest psychiatric institution in the country. Its transformation is expected to significantly enhance mental healthcare capacity and regional access, while also positioning Bangladesh as a leader in mental health innovation in South Asia.
