Blaze Erupts in CEPZ Factory

2 min read

A devastating fire swept through a seven-storey factory in Chattogram’s Export Processing Zone on Thursday afternoon, quickly spiraling out of control. The blaze began around 2:30 p.m. and has since engulfed the upper floors of the building, according to fire officials.

The factory, which reportedly produced medical equipment for hospitals, has sustained heavy damage. Witnesses said flames spread rapidly despite efforts to douse them with water from nearby reserve tanks. By evening, the fire had also reached a neighboring tin-shed structure, further complicating containment efforts.

Firefighting Efforts Underway

At least 16 units of the Fire Service and four units from the Bangladesh Navy have been deployed to the scene. Firefighters are struggling to bring the situation under control due to the intensity of the flames and the flammable materials inside the building.

Officials fear that the prolonged blaze has weakened the structure, raising the risk of a partial or full collapse. “The fire has spread extensively, and the building is on the verge of collapsing,” said Md. Jahangir, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (Port Zone).

No Casualties Reported So Far

Authorities confirmed that, as of now, no casualties have been reported and there are no indications of workers trapped inside. However, the extent of the damage and the long-term stability of the building remain major concerns.

Talha Bin Jasim, spokesperson for the Fire Service headquarters, said the fire originated on the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors of the building. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams working tirelessly to prevent the flames from spreading further.

Growing Concerns

The incident has sparked alarm in the industrial hub, where thousands of workers are employed in export-oriented factories. While the immediate priority is to contain the fire and ensure safety, questions are already being raised about fire safety standards and preparedness in CEPZ facilities.

For now, emergency crews remain on high alert as the battle to control the inferno continues late into the night.
