Nepal’s Gen-Z Uprising Leader Sudan Gurung to Contest 2026 Election

1 min read

At the start of this month, Gen-Z protesters in Nepal toppled the government of KP Sharma Oli in a mass uprising. One of the movement’s most prominent figures, 36-year-old Sudan Gurung, has now announced he will run in the upcoming national election.

Following the upheaval, an interim government was formed under Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who declared that new elections will be held in March 2026.

Gurung, who has emerged as a leading voice for young Nepalis, vowed not to retreat. “We will not back down. There is no place for the old corrupt politicians anymore,” he said. He explained that his team is already mobilizing supporters and transforming their “movement for change” into a political platform. Rather than running as independents, Gurung and his allies plan to contest as a united party. “Together we are stronger,” he emphasized.

His agenda extends beyond fighting corruption. Gurung and his party have pledged to strengthen Nepal’s tourism industry and pursue balanced relations with neighboring India and China based on equal respect.
