A critical incident has been declared in Sydney’s south-west after a 60-year-old man died during his arrest following a domestic violence assault.Police were called to a home on Bligh Avenue in Lurnea around 4:05 p.m. on Friday, where they found a 58-year-old woman suffering serious injuries. Authorities allege the woman’s husband fled the scene before being located and arrested at a nearby address on Spica Street in Sadleir.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King said the man had consumed prohibited drugs and was being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the time of his arrest. He was briefly handcuffed, but the restraints were removed at the request of medical staff as his condition worsened.

The man was transported to WestMed Hospital for further treatment but died a short time later. Meanwhile, the injured woman was taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious head injuries. A weapon was recovered from the scene, police confirmed.

Authorities have launched a critical incident investigation, which will be independently overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and the Professional Standards Command. A report is being prepared for the coroner.
