Canberra: The Australian government has announced a $12 billion investment in new defence projects under the AUKUS security pact, aimed at strengthening the nation’s military capabilities in the Indo‑Pacific.
Defence Minister Richard Marles said the funding will support advanced submarine technology, cyber‑warfare systems, and joint training programs with the United States and United Kingdom. “This is about ensuring Australia is prepared for the strategic challenges of the coming decades,” Marles told reporters.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions, with China expanding its naval presence in the South China Sea and Pacific Islands. Critics have questioned the cost and long‑term sustainability of the AUKUS commitments, while supporters argue the investment is essential for national security.
Parliament is expected to debate the funding package later this month, with bipartisan support likely.
