Independent Candidate and Shibir-Backed Nominee Win Top Posts in Jahangirnagar University Student Union Election

Abdur Rashid Jitu, running as an independent, has been elected vice president (VP) of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU), while Mohammad Mazharul Islam, backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, secured the post of general secretary (GS).

In Thursday’s vote across the university’s 21 residential halls, Jitu won the VP race with 3,334 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Shibir-backed Arif Ullah, who received 2,392. Arifuzzaman Ujjal of the Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Union-backed Student Unity Forum came third with 1,211 votes, followed by Chhatra Dal’s Sheikh Sadi Hasan with 648.

Mazharul Islam claimed the GS position with 3,930 votes, well ahead of Abu Touhid Md. Siam of the Student Unity Forum (1,238) and Chhatra Dal’s Tanzila Hossain Boishakhi (941).

  • Cultural Secretary: Mohibullah Sheikh
  • Assistant Cultural Secretary: Raihan Uddin
  • Literature & Publications Secretary: Zahidul Islam

According to the election commission, 11,743 students were eligible to vote — 5,728 female and 6,015 male — with turnout at around 68 percent.

Jitu, convener of the “Gonobhyutthan Rokkhya Andolon” platform, was previously involved with the Bangladesh Chhatra League before joining quota reform protests, during which he was injured in an attack allegedly by Chhatra League activists. Mazharul Islam serves as office and publicity secretary of the university’s Chhatra Shibir unit and is a student of the English department’s 48th batch.

Vote counting began Thursday night after ballot boxes were brought to the Senate building, with results announced nearly 48 hours later.
