Zelensky in Washington for High-Stakes Peace Push

1 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Washington, D.C., aiming to secure a lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war. At 5:15 p.m. local time on Monday, he is set for a one-on-one meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, followed by a 7 p.m. joint session with leaders from the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Finland, the European Union, and NATO.

White House officials say the presence of European and NATO leaders is intended to demonstrate unity and solidarity with Ukraine. The central agenda: ending the war and exploring the framework for a permanent peace agreement.

The talks come just days after Trump’s high-profile meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. While Trump had previously backed a ceasefire, he shifted his stance after the Putin summit, now advocating for a direct and durable peace deal instead.

European leaders are expected to press for security guarantees for Ukraine, while Zelensky has signaled he will resist any settlement that requires ceding territory. The outcome of today’s meetings could set the tone for the next phase of diplomacy and determine whether the conflict moves closer to resolution or deeper into stalemate.
