A Dhaka court has extended the deadline for the investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, setting September 14 as the new date for submission of the probe report. This marks the 120th time the deadline has been pushed back since the case was filed in 2012.
The couple was brutally killed in their rented apartment in West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012, while their four-year-old son was present. The case, initially handled by local police, was later transferred to the Detective Branch and then to the Rapid Action Battalion. Despite repeated extensions, no conclusive report was submitted.
Following a High Court directive in late 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a four-member task force to take over the investigation. The Police Bureau of Investigation was appointed as the lead agency, though the identities of the other members remain undisclosed.
Authorities have yet to deliver any breakthrough in the case, which continues to draw public attention and frustration over the prolonged delay in justice.
