Heartfelt tributes are pouring in for a Perth man who tragically lost his life while BASE jumping in the Italian Dolomites.
James Nowland, a resident of Western Australia, died on Wednesday in the renowned mountain range in Italy’s northeast. Italian media reported that the 42-year-old fell after leaping from the summit of Sass Pordoi in Val di Fassa.
Emergency services responded to the crash at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters. It is believed that a technical issue prevented Mr. Nowland from opening his parachute, leading to the fatal accident. BASE jumping, which involves jumping from buildings, antennas, spans such as bridges, and Earth cliffs, is known for its high risk.
The Australian BASE Association highlighted the dangers of the sport, describing them as “obvious and very real.” They noted that BASE jumping is an activity often pursued after mastering skydiving. The sport gained global attention in October 2012 when Felix Baumgartner jumped from a balloon 38 kilometers above Earth, becoming the first skydiver to break the sound barrier at speeds exceeding 1,110 kilometers per hour.
