Cricket Community Mourns Loss of Afghan Umpire Bismillah Jan Shinwari

The international cricket community is mourning the passing of Bismillah Jan Shinwari, a highly respected Afghan umpire and member of the ICC International Panel of Umpires. Shinwari died at the age of 41 after battling an illness.

A Celebrated Umpire

Shinwari had built a commendable career officiating at the highest levels of international cricket. He officiated in 25 One Day Internationals and 21 T20 Internationals. He made his debut on the international stage in December 2017, standing in an ODI between Afghanistan and Ireland in Sharjah.

His most recent assignment was during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Al Amerat, Oman, in February 2025. His contributions to the game have been widely recognized and appreciated.

The ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his heartfelt condolences on Shinwari’s passing. “Bismillah was a prominent umpire respected by players, peers, and officials alike. He was a regular on the international circuit and had a long career ahead of him,” Shah said. “His contributions to the game were immense. We are profoundly saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
