A horse in south-east Queensland has died after contracting the Hendra virus, marking the first confirmed case in the state since 2022, according to authorities.
Biosecurity Queensland announced that the unvaccinated horse tested positive for the virus on Friday, July 4, and its condition worsened rapidly. Hendra virus is a highly serious disease that can infect both horses and humans, with potentially fatal outcomes.
The virus is known to be transmitted from flying foxes to horses, and can then spread from horse to horse, as well as from horse to dog or human. Horses typically contract the virus through contact with materials contaminated by infected flying fox bodily fluids and excretions.
Once infected, horses can pass the virus to others via direct contact with infectious body fluids or indirectly through contaminated equipment. The recent case underscores the importance of vaccination and biosecurity measures to prevent further spread of this deadly disease.
