Israeli Leaders Condemn Antisemitic Attacks in Melbourne

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials have strongly condemned the antisemitic attacks in Melbourne on Friday night, which targeted a synagogue and a Jewish restaurant.

In a statement posted overnight in Hebrew, Netanyahu called the assault on the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and Miznon restaurant “vile,” urging the Australian government to take “all necessary measures” to identify and bring the offenders to justice.

“Vile antisemitic attacks, accompanied by chants of ‘Death to the IDF’ and an attempt to harm a house of worship, are serious hate crimes that must be uprooted at their source,” Netanyahu emphasized. He reaffirmed Israel’s support for the Australian Jewish community and called on authorities to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Israel will continue to stand with the Jewish community in Australia,” he said, adding, “We call on the Australian government to take all necessary measures to bring the rioters to justice and to prevent such attacks in the future.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the violence, describing the synagogue attack as “chilling.” On X (formerly Twitter), Herzog stated, “I condemn outright the vile arson attack targeting Jews in Melbourne’s historic and oldest synagogue on the Sabbath, and the assault on an Israeli restaurant where people gathered to enjoy a meal together.”

Both leaders expressed solidarity with the victims and called for decisive action to combat antisemitism.
