Authorities are searching for the driver of a car believed to have caused the death of a 53-year-old man during a burnout in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

Emergency services responded early Sunday morning to a crash site on a fire trail off Haul Road in Stockrington, northwest of Newcastle, after reports of a collision. Police say a Ford Fairmont sedan was performing a burnout when the driver allegedly struck three people before fleeing the scene.

Two women who were hit managed to leave the scene before emergency crews arrived. However, the 53-year-old man sustained critical head injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.

The vehicle involved was reportedly found burned out on McFarlanes Road at Chisholm, near Maitland, around 2:40 am.
