Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday clarified that reports of former Chief Election Commissioner Habibul Awal’s arrest are incorrect. He stated that the news circulating on Sunday was false, and it is actually former Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda who has been detained.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the Horticulture Centre in Mouchak, Kaliakair, Gazipur, the Adviser emphasized that the law enforcement agencies have not arrested Habibul Awal and assured that any involvement of officials would be thoroughly investigated. “The way mob justice was carried out during Nurul Huda’s detention is unacceptable. Such chaos took place in the presence of law enforcers, and an investigation will be conducted. If any law enforcement personnel are found involved, legal action will be taken,” he said.
The Adviser also mentioned that the government is working to develop a law to prevent illegal occupation of agricultural land and highlighted the importance of boosting local fruit production alongside foreign varieties to preserve native fruits.
During the visit, officials including Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr. Chowdhury Jaber Sadeq, Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kawsar Ahmed, and officials from the Horticulture Centre, including Enamul Haque, were present.
