Mr. Carney expressed his personal gratitude after the NSW Rural Fire Service sent 96 firefighters to Alberta to assist in battling wildfires across Canada’s Northern Prairies.
“Australia has been very helpful to Canada through the years, and most recently, with the terrible wildfires that have been raging across our Northern Prairies,” Mr. Carney said. “And once again, as Australians always do and you always do you have stepped up.”
He emphasized that the two nations share “the same values” and have strong interests in security and defense. Notably, Mr. Albanese recently signed a deal for Canada to purchase Australia’s $6.5 billion Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), a world-leading over-the-horizon radar technology used to detect aircraft and ships thousands of kilometers away a strategic asset to bolster Arctic defense.
Mr. Carney also highlighted Australia’s potential contributions to the G7, particularly through its critical minerals supply.
Prime Minister Albanese thanked the Canadian leader for the invitation to the summit, despite Australia not being a G7 member, and praised the Australian firefighters who traveled to Canada to assist in wildfire efforts.
