All Eight Super Netball Clubs Still in Finals Hunt with One Month Remaining

2 min read

It’s hard to believe given the shaky starts of some teams, but with just a month left in the regular season, all eight Super Netball clubs still have a shot at making the finals.

The urgency was clear in round 10, as the bottom four teams fought desperately to keep their seasons alive. Unfortunately for the Queensland Firebirds and Melbourne Mavericks, their hopes are likely to be dashed in round 11 when seventh and eighth place teams face off in Brisbane. Both teams showed determination over the weekend: the Mavericks narrowly lost to the West Coast Fever, 69-63, while the Firebirds fell to the Adelaide Thunderbirds, 65-58.

In her debut season with the NSW Swifts, Grace Nweke became the first shooter to reach 500 goals this year. However, she also scored her lowest individual total of 40 goals as the team reintroduced Sophie Fawns to the line-up. The Swifts had been undefeated for eight rounds before a mid-season slump saw them suffer back-to-back losses to the Fever and the Melbourne Vixens, both close games at 70-68.

Meanwhile, the Giants pulled off a surprise, winning two matches in a row for the first time in two years. Their victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning, 78-68, has helped them move away from the bottom of the ladder.

If you missed any of the action, don’t worry we’ve got you covered with our Super Netball Round-Up. Notably, during the Mavericks’ game, midcourter Tayla Fraser was penalized twice after expressing frustration at an umpire’s call, highlighting the intense emotions running through the season.
