A series of deadly road accidents involving six vehicles on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj district early Sunday resulted in the deaths of a traffic police officer and a bus helper, with at least 25 others injured.
The victims have been identified as Rafiquzzman, an assistant traffic sub-inspector from Bhatiapara Highway Police Station, and Selim Hossain Bepari, a bus helper and son of Abdul Hamid Bepari from Sonadanga Police Station area in Khulna city.
The identities of the injured are not yet known, but all were taken to Gopalganj’s 250-bed General Hospital for treatment.
According to locals, the incident began around 4 a.m. when a Khulna-bound bus operated by Baleshwar Paribahan, coming from Dhaka’s Jatrabari, collided with a parked truck in the Gopinath area. Moments later, three more buses, including one from Arman Paribahan, along with a microbus, crashed into the already involved bus, causing further damage and casualties.
The traffic police officer and the bus helper died at the scene, while the injured passengers were rushed to the hospital.
Traffic on the highway resumed approximately two hours after the wreckage was cleared, said Officer-in-Charge Mir Md Sajedur Rahman of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.
