Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ Reschedules Marvel Cinematic Universe Lineup

Disney has announced significant delays for Marvel Studios’ upcoming team-up blockbusters, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which will now premiere in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

“Doomsday” is now scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, pushed back from its original date of May 1, 2026. Similarly, “Secret Wars” has been moved to December 17, 2027, from its previous slot of May 7, 2027, reports variety.com. The studio revealed these shifts Thursday afternoon amid a broader reorganization of its theatrical release calendar.

In addition to delaying these major films, Disney has removed several unannounced Marvel titles from its schedule. The February 13, 2026, date previously set for an “Untitled Marvel” project has been wiped from the calendar, and the dates for upcoming “Untitled Marvel” films on November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have been replaced with “Untitled Disney” slots.

With these changes, the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films slated for release in 2026 are “Avengers: Doomsday” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” marking the smallest MCU film slate in several years. Notably, there will be no MCU movie between “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25 and the next Tom Holland “Spider-Man” installment on July 31, 2026 a gap of over a year. This will be the longest pause between MCU films since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the franchise’s release schedule, following the gap between 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and 2021’s “Black Widow.”

The studio has retained a few tentative “Untitled Marvel” dates in early 2028 February 18, May 5, and November 10 though specific titles such as “Armor Wars” and “Blade” have yet to receive official release dates.

This strategic shift reflects Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent remarks about redefining the company’s approach to superhero films, focusing on quality and sustainability rather than an overly saturated release schedule.
