Case Filed Against 408 Including Sheikh Hasina Over BNP Activist’s Murder

A case has been registered against 408 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, over their alleged involvement in the murder of a BNP activist during the 2024 mass uprising. The complaint was formally filed by Mostafizur Rahman Bappi, the brother of the victim, on April 20 in a Dhaka court, nearly eight months after the death of his brother.

Among the accused is actor and producer Iresh Zaker. The court has directed the Mirpur Model Police Station to record the case and conduct an investigation into the allegations. Rajib Hossain, an inspector at Mirpur police station, confirmed the filing of the case on Sunday.

The victim, Mahfuz Alam Sraban, 21, of Naogaon district, was shot and killed during the July-August movement at Mirpur on August 5, 2024. The incident occurred amid heightened political tensions and protests.

The list of accused includes prominent political and police figures: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, ex-home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, ex-foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, ex-state minister Nasrul Hamid, Sheikh Hasina’s adviser Salman F Rahman, as well as senior police officials, leaders of the Awami League, Jubo League, and the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.

This case marks a significant development amid ongoing political upheaval, with authorities mounting investigations into the violent events of the uprising and the alleged involvement of high-profile figures.
