Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett has expressed serious intentions to step away from the acting scene. In a recent interview with Radio Times in London, the 55-year-old star of The Lord of the Rings revealed her desire to focus on life beyond the stage and screen.

“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it,” Blanchett stated, hinting at a potential shift in her priorities. She was in London promoting her latest film, Black Bag, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The thriller, which co-stars Michael Fassbender, follows the lives of married spies working within the Secret Intelligence Service in London.

If Blanchett follows through with her retirement plans, Black Bag would serve as a remarkable capstone to her illustrious career. Born in 1969, Blanchett’s journey began on the Australian stage, where she performed with the Sydney Theatre Company in works such as Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and David Mamet’s Oleanna.

Her breakthrough came in 1999 with her BAFTA-winning portrayal of Elizabeth I in Elizabeth, directed by Shekhar Kapur. Since then, she has garnered international acclaim, winning two Academy Awards: Best Actress for Blue Jasmine in 2014 and Best Supporting Actress for The Aviator in 2005. Additionally, she has received two Best Actress awards at the Venice Film Festival for I’m Not There in 2007 and Tár in 2022.

As she contemplates this significant decision, Blanchett leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances and a profound impact on the film industry.
