Law enforcement authorities have detained 16 individuals in connection with a violent attack on activists from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Gazipur last night. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and prompted swift action from police officials.
In response to the attack, the officer-in-charge of Gazipur Sadar Police Station has been removed from duty due to allegations of inaction. Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan publicly acknowledged the police force’s failure to prevent the violence, expressing regret and taking full responsibility. “I apologize on behalf of the police force for our failure to take immediate preventive measures. No attackers will be spared, and we will respond decisively to each incident,” he stated during a rally organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement outside the deputy commissioner’s office.
The rally was a protest against the attack that left at least 20 people, including several movement leaders, critically injured. The violence erupted around 12:30 AM as activists attempted to protect the residence of former Minister for Liberation War Affairs, AKM Mozammel Haque, from being vandalized. Reports suggest that a group of assailants, allegedly linked to the defeated Awami League, initiated the attack.
In light of recent violence targeting students and civilians, the government has launched ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ nationwide, aimed at apprehending those responsible for such acts of terror.
The situation remains tense as the community seeks justice and accountability for the attack, with law enforcement promising to take further action against those involved and any police personnel who failed to respond effectively.
