An industrial blaze at the Cleanaway Chemical Waste Recycling Facility in St Marys, Sydney, has escalated to the highest alarm level, prompting a substantial firefighting response. Currently, two firefighters are receiving treatment for heat exhaustion, with one hospitalized due to the extreme conditions.
The fire, reported just before 2 PM, quickly spread from stored materials outside the facility into various areas of the premises. Firefighters initially attempted an internal assault on the flames but had to switch to an unstaffed hose line as the situation intensified.
A formidable team of 155 firefighters, supported by 45 trucks and specialist hazmat units, is actively combating the fire. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Superintendent Adam Dewberry characterized the incident as “extremely dangerous, intense, fast, and hot.” Unfortunately, crews have faced challenges in accessing sufficient water, leading to the deployment of a specialized water truck and bulk tanker to assist in containment efforts.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have evacuated up to 100 properties, including residential, industrial, and commercial buildings, while FRNSW continues to assess the situation. Firefighters remain on the scene, focused on bringing the blaze under control amidst the ongoing challenges.
