In a dramatic turn of events on Thursday night, a lighter vessel laden with 1,175 tonnes of cement clinkers capsized in the turbulent waters of the Rupsha River in Khulna. The MV Seven Circle-23 met its unfortunate fate after colliding with a pillar of the Rupsha River rail bridge, as confirmed by Lieutenant Commander Md Siam-ul-Haq, the Coast Guard’s media officer.
The impact caused significant damage, with the vessel taking on water through a breach two feet below the surface. Swiftly responding to the emergency, the Coast Guard mobilized a rescue team equipped with a diving boat from the BCG Station Rupsha.
Upon arrival, the team discovered that over half of the vessel had submerged, yet fortune smiled upon the crew— all 13 members were reported safe, with no injuries sustained.
Rescue operations are ongoing as the Coast Guard maintains communication with the ship’s owner, determined to navigate this challenging situation.
