In a promising development, New South Wales Police have uncovered fresh clues in the ongoing search for Hadi Nazari, a 23-year-old hiker who has been missing in the Snowy Mountains for nearly two weeks. Nazari set out on a hiking trip with two friends in Kosciuszko National Park on December 22, with plans to return five days later. However, he separated from the group on the final day to take photographs near the Hannels Spur Trail at Geehi.
When Nazari failed to arrive at the designated campground, concerns grew, and he was reported missing. On Sunday, searchers discovered several items believed to belong to him, including a camera, a camera case, and a lighter found near the remnants of a small campfire.
Riverina Police District Commander Superintendent Andrew Spliet emphasized the importance of determining the timeline of Nazari’s last known whereabouts. “We are trying to ascertain how long ago that little campfire was lit,” he stated. “That will provide us with a clearer timeline of when he was last in that area, which has now become a focal point in our search efforts.”
The search operation has been extensive, involving approximately 300 individuals, including family members of Nazari, who are actively assisting in the effort. Superintendent Spliet noted the challenging conditions, describing the bushland as “very thick, very dense.”
Since establishing a command post on December 27, authorities have mobilized specially trained bushwalkers from the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and the State Emergency Service (SES) to aid in the search. Each day, dozens of specialized volunteers are airlifted into the area by helicopter to continue the search efforts for Nazari.
Authorities remain committed to thoroughly covering the search area until they are confident that every possible location has been explored. As hope persists, the community rallies behind the efforts to bring Hadi Nazari home safely.
