Heart-Wrenching Sacrifice: Bangladeshi Parents Give Their Lives to Save Daughter in Australia

2 min read

A tragic incident unfolded at Walpole Beach in Western Australia, where a Bangladeshi couple sacrificed their lives to save their daughter. On December 28, a sudden and devastating turn of events claimed the lives of Shahidul and Sabrina as they faced the merciless tides of the sea.

The couple had traveled to the Walpole area on holiday with their two daughters, Subah and Siana, seeking joy during the Christmas break. However, their bliss was shattered when, on that fateful afternoon, young Siana was unexpectedly swept away by the fierce waves. Without hesitation, both parents jumped into the tumultuous waters, determined to save their child. Their courageous actions succeeded in rescuing Siana but ultimately cost them their lives.

Local authority recovered their lifeless bodies from the ocean. Another brave Bangladeshi, Sajib Nandi, who was accompanying the family, also leaped into the sea to help save Siana. Fortuitously, he survived and is currently hospitalized at Denmark Hospital in Western Australia.

As the community mourns this unimaginable loss, the bodies of the deceased couple remain in the hospital morgue, awaiting transfer. The Bangladeshi community in Perth is in shock, grappling with the tragic news. Professors at Curtin University, where Shahidul worked as an associate professor in urban planning, are also deeply affected by the incident.

Dr. Prabir Sarkar, a colleague of Shahidul who recently returned from the same trip, expressed his grief, stating that he struggles to articulate his feelings given the profound loss. The couple had strong familial ties within the community.

Shahidul Hasan Swapan and Sabrina Ahmed Papri were both former students of Khulna University, having graduated from the Urban and Rural Planning (URP) discipline — Shahidul in the 1997 batch and Sabrina in the 2003 batch. Shahidul earned his PhD from Curtin University and owned a home in Perth.

This heartbreaking account of sacrifice and heroism not only highlights the deep bond between parents and their children but also serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.
