Local media reported that police used tear gas after Labé supporters threw stones onto the pitch in response to a controversial referee decision. Witnesses described chaotic scenes, including fans invading the field, as videos on social media showed large crowds trying to climb over walls, with some individuals, including children, lying unresponsive on the ground.
Paul Sakouvogi, a local journalist, noted that internet access in the region had been restricted, with police blocking access to a hospital treating the injured. Prime Minister Bah expressed condolences for the victims and assured full medical and psychological support for those affected.
The incident occurred during a match between Nzérékoré and Labé, part of a tournament honoring President Mamady Doumbouya, who came to power in a 2021 coup. The opposition has criticized such tournaments as attempts to bolster Doumbouya’s political ambitions ahead of upcoming elections.
This incident comes amid increased scrutiny of figures in Guinean football, particularly Aboubacar Sampil, president of the country’s football body, Feguifoot, who is under investigation for corruption and violence related to football matches. He has denied any wrongdoing despite allegations of influencing referees and bypassing protocols.
